Participants
Haddock, saithe, ling and tusk fished in Faroese waters are fully MSC certified as sustainable. Faroe Islands Sustainable Fisheries (FISF) is the holder of the MSC certifications of these fisheries in Faroese waters and offers other parties to become participants in the MSC certifications for these species.
FISF invites others to become registered participants of the MSC certifications of the fisheries for saithe, ling, and tusk. The invitation is offered to Faroese holders of fishing licences issued by the Ministry of Fisheries to fish in in Faroese waters, FAO fishing area 27, ICES fishing area Vb1 and Vb2 (North Eastern part of the Atlantic Ocean). The certifications also cover the fisheries for cod, haddock, and saithe according to the fisheries agreement between Faroe Islands and Iceland.
The prerequisites for applicants to be eligeble for participating in FISF’s certifications are as follows:
- Payment for internal and external costs for the certification processes. The costs are allocated among the participants in accordance with the estimated benefits gained from the certification.
- Comply by MSC standards for fishery and certification requirements, which includes the conditions and recommendations for the certification, and related plans for corrective actions to comply with such conditions and recommendations.
Haddock, saithe, ling, and tusk caught in Faroese waters are fully certified by MSC. The fisheries for these species are therefore certified to be sustainable. Faroe Islands Sustainable Fisheries (FISF) is the holder of these MSC certifications of the fisheries in Faroese waters for saithe, ling, and tusk, and FISF invites other to become participants hereof.

MSC certifications apply to all registered Faroese fishing vessels with valid fishing licences issued by the Ministry of Fisheries, if the fish is being caught and/or bought by a company registered as a participant in FISF.

Fisheries in the Barent’s Sea for cod, haddock, and saithe

MSC certifications apply to all registered Faroese fishing vessels with valid fishing licences issued by the Ministry of Fisheries, to fish in the Barent’s Sea. The fish needs to be caught and/or bought by a company registered as a participant in FISF for the MSC certification to apply.

Other certificate sharers
ISF and JFK entered an agreement on April 12th, 2016. The agreement stipulates that Icelandic vessels with permits to fish cod, haddock and saithe in the Barents Sea will share JFK’s MSC certificate for the fisheries. It also states, that Faroese vessels with permits to fish cod, haddock, and saithe in the Icelandic EEZ, will share ISF’s MSC certificate for the fisheries.
This agreement is replacing with an agreement with ISF and FISF on May 31st, 2021.

FISF Faroe Islands North East Arctic cod, haddock and saithe fishery
FISF have a certificate sharing agreement with Iceland Sustainable Fisheries (ISF) for the North East Arctic cod, haddock and saithe fishery, MSC-F-31322. The certicate sharing agreement include all Icelandic vessels that have an agreement with ISF. With fishing rights to fish in FAO 27, sub areas I and II.

FISF have certificate sharing agreement with Scottish White Fish Producers Association Ltd (SWFPA) for the Faroe Islands fishery for haddock, saithe and tusk, MSC-F-31402. The certificate sharing agreement include all Scottish vessels that is member of SWFPA and have fishing rights in Faroese Waters.
